Beef Ban and Controversy

By Unknown - 6:08 PM

In India, a country with majority in Hindu population (which is 78.35%), amongst which most of the people worship cow considering it to be sacred (*according to the statistics), cattle-slaughter was prevalent on a large scale.
As mentioned in Wikipedia, India produced 3.643 million metric tons of beef in 2012, of which 1.963 million metric tons was consumed domestically and 1.680 million metric tons was exported. India ranks 5th in the world in beef production, 7th in domestic consumption and 1st in exporting. How can this be possible if Prohibition of cow slaughter is a Directive Principles of State Policy contained in Article 48 of the Constitution? It reads, "The State shall endeavor to organize agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught
cattle."

In March 2015, the ban on cow-slaughter in Maharashtra proved to be a decision of many controversies. Following which many other states regulated same kind of law on beef. And today 24 of 29 states in India are following the principle. Some people were furious while others happy. Well, it all depends on the mindset of people. Is it just to show their love towards animals in the context when they are eating them as beef or when these animals are alive and happily grazing in the grasses? Not all states are pushing for tighter restrictions on beef. The chief minister of Goa has refused to back the ban, saying that around 40% of people there eat beef and he respected the rights of minorities.

The ban ruffled feathers on social media Some of the tweets are:

  • Rishi Kapoor : I am angry. Why do you equate food with religion?? I am a beef eating Hindu. Does that mean I am less God fearing then a non eater? Think!!
  • Farhan Akhtar :  "So now in Maharashtra you can have a beef with someone, but you can't have beef with someone."
  • Sidhartha Mallya : "If I was to go to someone's house for dinner and they served me a steak, would I automatically become an accessory to the crime?"
  • Author Shobhaa De : "Where's the beef? I am willing to face five years in jail to defend the right of beef eaters in Maharashtra."

Keeping the sentiments of every religion in mind, my personal view is that if people demand beef, they have complete right for it. But if this extends to a level which is above the limit, where business and profit has more importance then likes and dislikes, banning can be one of the available options.
